Gemmotherapy

Gemmotherapy

Gemmotherapy takes its name fromGemmae , the French word for bud.  This therapeutic approach takes the young springtime shoots and/or buds of trees and shrubs and extracts the nutrients into solution. A 'mother tincture' is prepared from this extract and used therapeutically. Gemmotherapy is more similar to a herbal rather than a homeopathic remedy, and has more of a biochemical effect on the body. The remedy is given to  facilitate drainage of the primary elimination systems of the body, i.e. lungs, liver and kidneys.

This therapy is very timely for those living in  developed nations like the  USA who carry a large burden of toxins and whose energy is depleted by too much stress and overwork.

The Secret of this Plant Medicine

Gemmotherapy is a super-active type of plant medicine, the powerful effect coming largely from the growth hormones of the fresh germinating parts of plants, called Gibberlins and Auxins. Gemmotherapy has the power of stimulating the cleansing  of the cells by draining away toxic metabolic waste products such as mucus, waste metabolites, dead cells from the defense system, and auto-immune complexes that are impairing cell function.

In addition, Gemmotherapy remedies build up the function of organs. Since different plants have affinity for particular organs or tissues of the body, the type of Gemmotherapy remedy selected will support the organ or tissue that it has affinity for.

The use of the buds, young leaf and rootlets makes it possible to obtain a more active medication, with no need to prescribe large doses. Starting with a fresh embryonic plant distinguishes this branch from traditional plant medicine where extracts and powders are prepared from adult plants, sometimes dried.

Weight for weight, buds contain all of the active ingredients in more concentrated form than in other parts of the adult plant. Pharmacological studies comparing the action of buds extracts and usual herbal tinctures on target organs and tissues have clearly demonstrated an increased activity for bud extracts.

Gemmotherapy Medicine Preparation

Young parts of plants are harvested and placed in mixture of glycerine and alcohol to soak for 21 days. Glycerine enhances extraction of the active ingredients and alcohol preserves their function.

Gemmotherapies are prepared in accordance with the official method for homeopathic preparations in the French pharmacopeia, the most exacting standards in the world. A 1 in 10 dilution is the medicinal form of the remedies and provides a consistent effect with optimal results.

All gemmotherapies are prescribed in separate bottles since mixing carries the risk of reaction with each other that alters their therapeutic properties.

Examples of the Use of Gemmotherapy Remedies

Hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha) berries are traditionally used to treat conditions of the heart. The Gemmotherapy preparation of Crataegus is of the young buds of the plant. It can be used to normalize heart tissues, reverse chronic heart failure, help in recovery from surgery in children with congenital heart defects, for tachycardia, and for arrhythmias. After a heart attack, Gemmotherapy Crataegus  can help normalize EKG readings.

Wild woodvine (Ampelopsis weichii) in Gemmotherapy form is useful to rebuild joints as it stimulates the regrowth of ligaments & cartilage.

Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) also has a positive effect on joints and synovial fluid as well as arthritic conditions.

The Sequoia tree, or Giant Redwood is the picture of stength and longevity. The gemmotherapy Sequoia bud is supreme for being like a fountain of youth, decreasing the signs of aging by normalizing hormonal function, especially for ageing women. It also helps to rebuild adrenal function with Ribes nigrum.

European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) in Gemmotherapy form, is specific to the sinus mucous membranes. It can be used for chronic sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, and allergies.

Common Juniper (Juniperus communis) is well known in herbal medicine for its effect on the kidneys and bladder. The Gemmotherapy preparation Juniperus also works on the kidneys to reverse almost any kidney condition, even helps clear uric acid from the body. It tonifies the liver to work more efficiently as it stimulates the hepatic cells for general detoxification, and is useful in liver cirrhosis.

Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is rich in specific Gibberlins which are especially restorative to the venous system.

When healing an illness, there is often relatively little that doctors and patients can do to directly produce optimum functioning of human physiology. Plants, however, provide the biochemical and nutritional compounds that assist the body’s internal ecology and promote its innate homeostasis and equilibrium. Phytonutrients nourish the organs, support the tissues, and enhance immunity, while the medicinal phytochemicals constituents of botanical species detoxify metabolic waste andxenobiotics (Chemical substances that are foreign to the biological system which include naturally occurring compounds, drugs, environmental agents, carcinogens, insecticides, etc.). No synthetic pharmaceutical drug can perform these functions.

Just as plants are our one way to reverse global warming, to stabilize disturbed weather patterns, or to detoxify environmental contamination. Plants do all of these things. They cool the planet, help regulate the seasons, recharge groundwater, restore soil fertility and stop erosion. They regenerate the ozone layer, bind atmospheric carbon dioxide and purify the toxins we put everywhere. Plants perform the same crucial ecological functions in the outer environment as well as the inner environment of our bodies.
